One UI 9 is still making its way to Galaxy phones, and we already have a good idea of what the next version will be built on. According to a new report from Sammy Fans, One UI 9.5 for the Galaxy S27 series will most likely run on Android 17 QPR2 and not the original Android 17 release.

Quick answer: As of October 18, 2026, Samsung hasn’t confirmed which Android 17 build One UI 9.5 uses. Reports point to Android 17 QPR2, the same approach Samsung took with One UI 8.5 on Android 16 QPR2. Google pushed QPR2 Beta 7.1 to Pixel phones on October 16, and the stable release is expected in December.

If the QPR part sounds confusing, don’t worry. Let me explain what it means and why it matters for the Galaxy S27 and for the phone you already own.

What is Android 17 QPR2?

QPR stands for Quarterly Platform Release. After Google launches a big Android version, it keeps shipping smaller updates every few months. These bring new features and fixes on top of the same Android number. Pixel owners know them as Feature Drops.

So Android 17 QPR2 is still Android 17. It’s just a newer, more polished version of it, with everything Google has added since the first release.

Here’s why that matters. If Samsung builds One UI 9.5 on QPR2, the Galaxy S27 will launch with Google’s latest Android 17 features from day one, not the ones from the original release.

Samsung did the same thing with One UI 8.5

This isn’t a wild guess. The Galaxy S26 series launched this year with One UI 8.5, and as Sammy Fans points out, that version was built on Android 16 QPR2 and not the original Android 16.

One UI 9.5 sits in the same spot in Samsung’s schedule. It’s the half-step update that arrives with the new Galaxy S flagships early in the year. So if Samsung sticks to the plan that worked for the S26, QPR2 is the obvious base.

One UI version Android base Status
One UI 8.5 Android 16 QPR2 Debuted on the Galaxy S26 series
One UI 9 Android 17 Stable rollout going on now
One UI 9.5 Android 17 QPR2 (expected) Expected on the Galaxy S27 series in early 2027

Still, Samsung hasn’t said anything officially. Sammy Fans itself calls it highly likely, not confirmed. I’d treat it the same way.

Google just pushed Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7.1

Google is clearly still working on QPR2. On October 16, the official Android Beta Program account announced Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7.1 on Reddit. It’s build CP41.260831.019 and it’s available for every eligible Pixel, from the Pixel 6a to the Pixel 11 series.

This one is a small update with a single fix listed. But it’s an important one. It fixes severe UI stuttering and multi-second freezes that happened when the phone was low on memory.

That kind of bug would hurt Galaxy phones too, so it’s good to see it fixed well before Samsung locks in its software. According to Sammy Fans, the stable QPR2 release is expected in December 2026. Google has also started early testing of Android 17 QPR3, which should reach Pixel phones around the time the Galaxy S27 goes on sale.

What to expect from One UI 9.5

We don’t have a full feature list yet, but a few things have already leaked.

The biggest one is a native App Lock. Google has been testing App Lock for Pixel phones in its QPR betas, and leaked One UI 9.5 builds show that Samsung has added it to Galaxy phones as well. Today, most Galaxy users rely on Secure Folder to keep apps private, so a simple lock for any app would be a welcome change.

A leaked internal build also showed a redesigned software update banner. That’s a small thing, but Sammy Fans reads it as a sign that One UI 9.5 will set the base for the bigger One UI 10 update.

We’ve also seen One UI 9.5 test builds for the Galaxy S26, Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 on Samsung’s servers. I covered those, along with the expected beta timeline, in my One UI 9.5 roundup.

What this means for your Galaxy phone

If you buy a Galaxy S27, you should get the newest Android 17 features out of the box. If you already own a Galaxy S26, S25 or S24, nothing changes today. Your next stop is still One UI 9, and you can check where it has reached on our One UI 9 update tracker.

The S26 series is likely to get One UI 9.5 after the S27 launches, the same way older flagships got One UI 8.5 after the S26 launched. Other phones will follow based on Samsung’s update policy for each model.

And if you’ve been reading about Samsung replacing One UI with something called Galaxy OS, that’s a separate rumor aimed at 2028. I broke down what we know about it in this post.

I’ll update this story once Samsung confirms the Android base for One UI 9.5 or the beta goes live.
